The service

The floor that ties a home together

Microcement is a thin, cement-based coating applied by hand in layers and then sealed. On floors, it creates a smooth, continuous surface with no grout lines, no board joints and no visible breaks between rooms. Hallways, kitchens, living spaces and bathrooms can all share one finish, which makes a home feel calmer and more spacious.

Because it's only a few millimetres thick and can be applied over almost any sound existing surface, including existing tiles, microcement often avoids the need to lift old floors. That saves time, mess and the knock-on work of adjusting doors and thresholds.

Allan Anderson owns the business and applies every floor himself. Where doors need trimming or skirting needs replacing, he ties in with trusted joiners.

Who it's for

Homeowners wanting a modern, continuous floor, open-plan extensions, and shops, salons and offices needing a premium, easy-clean surface.

When it's needed

When tiled floors are dated or grout is stained, rooms feel broken up by different floorings, or a new extension needs a floor that flows.

Why use a specialist

Floors take the most wear in any building. Preparation, layer thickness and sealing must be right for the finish to last.

What it costs to wait

Broken-up floors make homes feel smaller

Different floors in every room, stained grout and worn surfaces quietly make a home feel cluttered and older. And lifting floors to fix it is one of the most disruptive jobs in any renovation.

Grout that holds dirt

Floor grout is the first thing to discolour in hallways and kitchens, and it rarely cleans back to its original colour.

Costly uplift and waste

Lifting old tiles is noisy, dusty and generates waste that needs removing; costs that add up before anything new goes down.

Level changes and trip points

Mixing floor types often creates thresholds and height changes between rooms, which look untidy and catch feet.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • × Lifting sound tiles that could have stayed as a base.
  • × Choosing a floor colour from a small swatch online rather than a sample in the room.
  • × Not planning how the floor will run through doorways and between rooms.
  • × Using a decorative coating that isn't designed for foot traffic.
  • × Skipping proper sealing on a floor that sees daily wear.

In detail

Microcement floors in detail

How microcement floors are built, where they work best, and what to consider for homes and businesses across West and Central Scotland.

Suitable existing floors

Microcement can go over almost any sound existing surface, including ceramic and porcelain tiles and many screeds. The existing floor must be firm and stable. Allan checks this during the free survey and explains whether any areas need attention first.

Because the build-up is thin, door clearances and thresholds are usually less affected than with new tiles or engineered boards.

The layered system

As a fully approved Cimentart applicator, Allan follows the full system: preparation, primer, base layers for strength, finishing layers for appearance, and a sealer suited to floor traffic. Floors typically need a more robust build than walls because of constant wear.

Finish and grip

Floors can be finished smooth and calm or with subtle movement. In bathrooms, wet rooms and entrances, grip is discussed so the finish suits how the floor will be used. Physical samples let you see and feel the difference.

Where microcement floors work

Popular areas include kitchens, open-plan extensions, hallways, bathrooms, en-suites and utility rooms. Microcement also continues up stairs for a striking, unified look: see our microcement stairs page.

Homes across Glasgow, Hamilton, Motherwell, Kirkintilloch, Clydebank and Ayr use microcement to connect rooms and modernise without lifting floors.

Commercial floors

In shops, salons, showrooms, offices and restaurants, a joint-free floor gives a premium first impression and simplifies cleaning. Traffic levels and cleaning routines are discussed at the site visit so the build and sealer suit the space.

Working with Glasgow Microcement

What to expectfrom first call to handover

Glasgow Microcement LTD is owned and run by Allan Anderson, a specialist applicator of decorative finishes. There is no sales team and no subcontracting of the finish itself: the person who visits your property, measures up and talks through samples is the same person who applies your microcement floors finish.

Allan is a fully approved Cimentart microcement applicator and a fully approved Infinity Effects spray granite applicator. Approval means the materials are applied the way the manufacturer intends: preparation, layering and protection all follow the system rather than shortcuts.

When a project needs more than a finish, such as a new shower, a moved sink, trimmed doors or boxed-in pipework, Allan ties in directly with trusted plumbers and joiners. You get one point of contact who plans the order of work, so trades are not left waiting on each other and nothing falls between the gaps.

Free, no-obligation site visit

Allan comes to your home or premises, checks the existing surfaces and explains honestly what is and is not suitable before any quote is agreed.

Physical sample boards

Colours and textures look different under Scottish daylight and your own lighting. Samples let you see and touch the finish where it will actually live.

A clear written quote

Every project is priced individually after the visit, so you know exactly what is included before you commit. No guide prices are given without seeing the job.

£3 million public liability insurance

Work is carried out with £3M public liability cover in place, for homes and commercial properties alike.
